No, if you talk to Dearo after completing the quest, you get to choose between 35,000 experience in Strength & Hits or Attack & Defence

If you talk to Daero you can choose whether you want training or whether you want to go back to the island...if you choose the training/exp you will get at minimum 20k defence exp

Defense experience is an option; however, if you do not talk to Daero after quest completion, you will not get defense. Hence the millions of pures that have a Dragon Scimitar, yet are still 1 defense.
