Get two-three more opinions on surgery before you go ahead with it. Surgery should be the last option especially if the success lies at 50/50.
Check out multiple chiropractors. Go to a specialist who focuses on the lumbar region. Ask them for exercises which help keep the area mobile and as well as strengthen it.
Get regular scans on the area to see how the disc sits to see if the chiro is making a difference.
Do all you can to accommodate the injury. Make sure your mattress is optimal for having a slipped disc in the lumbar area. How you sleep could be important too. Consider taking fish/krill oil as it helps with the lubrication of discs. Go see your doctor and get a prescription for a behind the counter pain killer to minimize the pain as much as possible Also possibly a strong anti-inflammatory to reduce the inflammation surrounding the disc.
Lastly, perceive and be diligent. Don't let it get the better of you and be all emo about it. Do all you can.
