the way defense works in this game is the higher your defense level the higher chance that your opponent misses for zero on you. this stacks with defensive bonuses. 

 

at 20 def with mith ranged is useless. at 30 def with addy both melee and ranged are useless. fights are slower and it's harder to kill people because you can't hit them.
